Extendable Amphibious Undercarriage-Small and Medium Size

SUNTON EPU series extendable amphibious pontoon undercarriages are an optional design of the normal standard PU series amphibious undercarriages. The extendable pontoons could retract and extend outward hydraulically. The width of the small size undercarriage could be adjusted to 3m as a minimum. The hydraulic control is totally independent from the existing hydraulic circuit, which could be fully controlled by the operator in the cabin. The design of the extendable pontoons provides the most convenience of transporting the complete machine on trailer without dismantling it into modules. This brings a tremendous saving on logistics.


As per custom's request, we could provide the manually extendable pontoons, which is also a practical optional choice to meet customer’s budget. It can realize retraction and extension only through a pulling-block pulled by a machine as an excavator. Detail specification will be provided under request.

2. Product Features

1) Pontoon Construction

High Strength Weathering Cor-Ten plate steel is used in the fabrication of the pontoons. Cor-Ten steel is marine grade and corrosion resistance steel that has 5 to 8 times the atmospheric corrosion resistance and 20% more tensile strength than similar size 16Mn Q345B structural plate steel.


In the pontoon, there are many supporting steel bars which reinforcing pontoon strongly. Each pontoon has 2 bulkheads, providing 3 independent watertight compartments with inspection plugs located on the outside of the pontoons. Each compartment of the pontoon has 1x25mm drain hole at bottom and 1x25mm inspection hole on side of pontoon near the top. Service man manholes on each pontoon are optional, made for easy maintenance and field servicing.


Pontoons are shot blasted to ensure that the surface is thoroughly clean and free from contaminants and rust. In addition, this process presents the steel with a surface texture that provides excellent adhesion of prime coat of paint. Interior Metal Finish is coated with Zinc chromate rust inhibitor or Rust Inhibitor priming paint. Exterior Metal Finish is 2 part organic zinc epoxy base coat Primer, Epoxy topcoat.


The bottom of the pontoon is reinforced for rough terrain operations. Especially the chains runway channels or paths are made of 3-layers steels, 2-part HD70 high tension steel plus the spring steel wear plate, which highly prolong the pontoon’s service life.


SUNTON Pontoon shape is quite uniquely designed that could reduce the resistance of the water or mud during its moving.


The hydraulic hoses or pipes are shielded with steel from being damaged during operations.


2) Track Chains and Track Shoes

Each SUNTON pontoon could be equipped with two, three or four strands of heavy-duty track chains. The chain link pads and track pads are all made of high tension steel HD70. The design and size of SUNTON track chain rollers and pins or bushes are all different from others with larger sizes. Tensile strength of link pads could reach 680Mpa. The chain roller paths/channels are lined with high strength abrasion-resistant steel and spring steel that matches the hardness of the chain rollers.


Track shoes/cleats/pads are fabricated with heavy duty steel, which makes it less prone to cracking, due to the wider spread between yield strength and ultimate tensile strength. Track pad steel tensile strength reaches 620Mpa. Customer could select much harder steels, whose tensile strength could reach 860Mpa, but cost is higher. Track shoes are box-shaped, welded or bolted to the chains and fully covering the pontoons. UHMW wear plate or HDPE or HDMP plate, is the optional design to meet the challenge of wearing when machine often moves on stiff or tough ground. Usually there are two Ultra High Molecular Weight trackwear pads per cleat.


3) Drive Motor System

Power for the pontoon tracks is provided by the excavator’s diesel engine and main hydraulic pumps through a hydraulic swivel. Hydraulic travel motors and brake combinations are mated to sealed planetary final drives to provide independent power to each pontoon track. SUNTON always design the pontoons strictly subject to each user’s applications. Each pontoon could be equipped with one or two hydraulic motors, say SUNTON could design both 2-motor and 4-motor amphibious undercarriage.


SUNTON understands that some customers prefer 4-motor undercarriage in view of the so-called Multi-motors or 4x4 gear system as land vehicles to get more driving power or spare use. But SUNTON’s mainly focus on the necessity and the integral consideration of the machines application, costs and weight that might off-set the buoyancy etc. No matter one or two motors, the principle is to guarantee the machine having ample propelling power for each application. Actually, SUNTON’s many 2-motor undercarriages provide much more power than 4-motor undercarriages because the motors selected are usually heavy duty motors and much more ample than the requirement of the undercarriage. SUNTON’s driving motor are all imported from South Korea and made by DOOSAN. Several overseas customers prove that SUNTON motors perform very well and much stronger than others overseas brands on propelling the undercarriages. We could provide the evidence concerned for the reference.


4) Driving Wheel and Idlers

SUNTON unequivocally favors a non weld-on sprocket design, but a bolt-on sprocket system for perfect track pitch alignment. Sprockets are precisely machined and bolted onto the axial. This concept ensures a perfect alignment of each sprocket across the axial, a critical criterion for the longevity of the track chain.


The sprockets and axles of the driving wheels and idlers are equipped with 2 bearings for each side which are skeleton floating sealing ring instead of rubber sealing, which ensure the driving system and idlers have strong performance on heavy duty applications and much longer life time.


SUNTON owes the patent design of different track chain speeds on each side of the pontoon. This design could greatly alleviate the torque that builds rapidly when undercarriages turning on firm material.


The hardworking sprockets, axles or shafts, rollers and bushings (embedded within the rollers) are made from flame high tension steel, very thick plate, to match the hardness of the track chain rollers which helps in reducing the frequency of replacement and costly downtime. Rollers travel on a strip of wear resistant steel track, preventing it from premature wearing to the pontoons.


5) Others

√ Heavy duty seamless steel tubes or steel beams connect pontoons and excavator uppers.

√ Optional hydraulic extendable pontoons.

√ Modular design for easy transportation.


3.Transportation:

Amphibious Undercarriage could be shipped by container ship or bulk ship.

When it’s shipped by container ship, the machine is usually disassembled into 3 main parts in advance and loaded to the containers for long distance ocean transportation. In usual, one set medium size amphibious undercarriage usually uses 2x40’GPs for shipment. When customer receives it, he only spends one hour to reassemble it with assistance of one set 20-25tons crane and 2-3 persons at site.


Based on our experiences, the most cost-effective way to ship the undercarriage is to disassemble it and ship the parts by bulk ship, but the shortcoming is that most bulk ships usually have only one shift in a month, much less than the container ships, which means the shipping time usually cost much more than container ships. Container ship shall be quicker much.


4.Product Warranties and Claims:

SUNTON, being as the Supplier, will guarantee that the amphibious undercarriages are made of best materials, with first class workmanship, brand new, unused and correspond to all respects with the quality, specifications and performance as stipulated in this contract. SUNTON shall also guarantee that the goods when properly operated and maintained, will give satisfactory performance. When the undercarriages are delivered to the client.


The guarantee period for the undercarriages is twelve (12) months from the date of delivery time. In case of any defect due to bad workmanship or use of defective materials, which emerges within the guarantee period, Customer could notify SUNTON in writing with a detailed and illustrated description, photos or videos of the defect. SUNTON has the right through the representative to check up and perform inspection of the defect in the place of presence of the Goods. If the defect is confirmed to be quality defects, SUNTON is obliged to ship the concerned replacement parts at FOB term to Customer within 30 (thirty) days since the date of inspection. All concerned liability of SUNTON on the product warranty is only limited to provide replacement parts and excluding providing any overseas or on-site services.


In case of any quantity unconformity to the packing list, Customer needs to make a written claim with any possible photos evidence within 10 (ten) days from the ETA of the product on the destination port. All the possible damages or accidents occurring in transportations shall be claimed against the Insurance Company.
